Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below
(星を追う子ども Hoshi o Ou Kodomo, lit. “Children Who Chase Stars”)
“It’s been 10 years since Makoto Shinkai’s brilliant debut with his individually created work Voices of a Distant Star [He painstaking crafted this film single-handedly, no joke.], and with the releases of The Place Promised in Our Early Days and 5 Centimeters per Second he’s widened his fanbase and gained a stellar reputation both inside and outside of Japan. And now, finally, director Makoto Shinkai’s highly anticipated newest work, Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below has been completed.”
I have always appreciated Shinkai’s visual aesthetic, in spite of his earlier works obscuring what were fascinating but peripheral plotlines by waxing poetic on emotions. In his longest work to date, he just may have hit the sweet spot, balancing story, adventure, artistry, and heart. There’s definitely more than a few nods paying homage to Miyazaki’s formula.
